If you read your Bible regularly, chances are you've come across the word abomination. You may also have heard the word used in sermons. So it should come as no surprise that an abomination in the Christian milieu carries negative connotations. On no occasion does the Bible speak positively of anything labeled abomination. As we continue with this article, we will examine the definition of abominations, what the Bible calls abominations, and what Christians should know about abominations.
An abomination is something that inspires hatred or disgust. Biblically, an abomination is something that God hates because it offends Him and His character. The Hebrew words translated “abomination” are often used in connection with such things as idolatry and false gods (Deuteronomy 17:2–5; 27:15; 29:17; Isaiah 66:3; Jeremiah 32:34; Ezekiel 5:9 ;11:18; Hosea 9:10). In1 Kings 11:5(ESV) the god Molech is referred to as "the abomination of the Ammonites.” The NIV translates it as “the abominable god of the ammonites.“The point here is that God hates the falsehood, wickedness and impurity of these pagan gods.
Definition and meaning of abomination
Abomination is defined as anything abominable; anything disliked or loathed. It indicates an intense dislike or disgust, as well as an abominable, abominable, or shameful act, condition, and/or habit. The meaning of abomination in the Bible can be better understood as expressing the idea that the Egyptians considered themselves unclean if they ate with strangers (Genesis 43:32). The Jews later followed the same practice and considered it unlawful to eat and/or drink with strangers/foreigners (John 18:28; Acts 10:28; 11:3). For the Egyptians, every shepherd was "an abomination(Genesis 46:34). This aversion to shepherds like the Hebrews probably arose from the fact that Lower and Middle Egypt had formerly been oppressed by a tribe of nomadic shepherds (the Hyksos) who had only recently been expelled. In addition, the Egyptians abhorred the lawless habits of these wandering shepherds.
What the Scriptures Say About Abominations
Abomination is used symbolically for sin in general (Isaiah 66:3); an idol (Isaiah 44:19); the ceremonies of the apostate church of Rome (Revelation 17:4); and an abominable deed (Ezekiel 22:11). Occult practices are also referred to in Scripture as abominations, as is child sacrifice (Deuteronomy 18:9-12; 20:18; 2 Chronicles 28:3). Scripture reveals abominations in God's eyes other than ungodly sexual relationships such as homosexuality and adultery (Leviticus 18:22-29; 20:13; Deuteronomy 24:4), imperfect sacrifices (Deuteronomy 17:1), transvestites (Deuteronomy 22:5), wickedness (Proverbs 15:9,26), dishonest dealings (Deut. 25:13–16; Proverbs 11:1; 20:10,23), being deaf to God’s instructions ( Proverbs 28:9), hypocritical offerings of the unrepentant (Proverbs 15:8; Isaiah 1:13), and sympathy with iniquity (Proverbs 17:15).
Most biblical references to what is abominable or abominable are found in God's law in Leviticus and Deuteronomy, in prophecies proclaiming God's judgment upon Israel, and in proverbs. Proverbs 6 reveals a list of seven things that God calls an abomination: "There are six things the Lord hates, seven abominations to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that plots evil plans, feet that hasten to evil, a false witness that spreads lies, and one that sows discord among brothers" (Proverbs 6:16-19). Jesus tells the Pharisees the same wayLukas 16:15– “What is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.” The context of this statement is a rebuke of the Pharisees' love of money.
More about what Scripture says about abominations
Titus 1:16tells us that false teachers "claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are despicable, disobedient and unable to do any good.Daniel and Jesus both foretold the abomination of desolation that would destroy the holy place of the temple (Matthew 24:15; Daniel 9:27). Also related to the end times, the whore of Babylon is depicted as "a golden cup in her hand, filled with abominable things and the filth of their adulteries” (Revelation 17:4). She is regarded as the mother of all abominations on earth (Revelation 17:5) and identified as "the great city that rules over the kings of the earth” (Revelation 17:18). And there is no doubt that this city will be destroyed with all its abominable deeds (Revelation 17:16-17).
From idolatry to ungodly sexual relations, unjust standards, and various kinds of wickedness, abominations separate people from God. In fact, we can say that every sin (that misses the mark of God's perfection) can be considered an abomination. Behold, all sin separates us from God and is detestable to Him (Romans 3:23; 6:23; Proverbs 15:9). God's hatred of sin makes Christ's sacrifice on the cross at Calvary all the more remarkable. The Bible lets us understand that it was on the cross that "God made him, who had no sin, sin for us, that in him we might become God's righteousness” (2 Corinthians 5:21). In suffering and dying for our sins, Jesus Christ identified himself with the Psalmist: “I am a worm and not a man, despised by all, despised by the people” (Psalm 22:6).

Leviticus 18:22– “Thou shalt not lie with a man as with a woman; it is an abomination.“
