Today is National Cereal Day, the most important day on the calendar. Okay, that might be an exaggeration, but there is no exaggerationhow much we love muesli. It's a quick, perfect meal you can eat any time of the day, there are so many types of cereal to choose from, and you'd have to be Homer Simpson to screw up a bowl.
To celebrate our favorite foods for breakfast, which we also commonly eat for lunch, dinner, and at 3 a.m., we're compiling the top 50 flavors. We'll stick with the most famous ones - unless we feel like recording a guy we like. That doesn't mean this list isn't definitive though, as we used super serious science/decades of food to put it together. So we can't imagine that anyone will have any problems with it.
50. Shredded Wheat
What was the original selling point for it? "Here's some unsweetened wheat to eat, and it's shredded to make it feel like chewing hard grass."
49. Grape Nuts
Nothing beats a bowl of grape flavored pebbles to start your day on the worst foot. At least that's what it gave us.
48. Boo-Beere
Made with pure blueberry concentrate and too much sugar for any human to safely consume, this is scarier than most horror movies.
47. Frankenbeere
Like Boo Berry, but with a slightly less disgusting - but still totally unappetizing - strawberry flavor. (Fear not Monster Cereals fans, one of them made the top 5.)
46. Wheat
Apparently, to be a champion, your breakfast has to taste like rough cardboard.
45. Nut & Honey
Best known for a string of not-so-clever commercials, we wouldn't prefer anything to this cereal.
44. Special K
Fancy Wheaties, but still blah. At least they don't lie about champions eating it.
43. Waffle Chips
Who sat around and said, "You know I like waffles, but what if we made them rock hard and then served them in milk, where they instantly go mushy?"
42. Rice Krispies treats granola
Many muesli variations are better than the original, but reverse engineering falls short here.
41. Alpha-Bits
Would be ranked much higher if they didn't become absolutely abominable the second you used up all the marshmallows.
40. Then
Can I interest you in some edible wood flavored with way too much honey? No I can't? Obviously.
39. Kekchips
A bowl of cereal that's literally a pile of cookies dipped in milk should be amazing, but these are basically flat rocks.
38. Cornflakes
Cornflakes are perfectly fine if they're all you have, but they're basically the foundation of a house with no part of the house installed yet. You really need a foundation but you can't live in it because it's just a hole.
37. French-Toast-Crunch
It has its fans that made General Mills bring it back to the US a few years ago. But there's a reason it's gone in the first place - it's an inferior version of one of the best cereals of all time.
36. Honey Bun Oats with Almonds
Pales in comparison to the best version in the line, and almonds are pretty pale, so they don't help the flavor profile.
35. Travel Chex
Too low? Maybe, but muesli should be eaten with milk, and Rice Chex tastes better on its own.
34. Puffin
The best "grown up" granola that still tastes good, but the regular variety isn't great, just decent.
33. Peanut Butter Cap'n Crunch
Peanut butter makes for a great granola flavor, but this version of the classic granola is just a little too peanut buttery, which sounds crazy, but this granola needs a better balance.
32. Honey tastes
They're still tasty, but they have a really unusual texture, and they're weird to eat if you're over 12 or sober.
31. Cap’n Crunch Beeren
Better than the peanut butter kind, but not as good as the original. The berries are a bit too sweet in a granola that's sweetened to perfection to start.
30. Crispix
Much better than you remember and they hold up better in milk than Chex. Chex are a better snack, but we classify grains here.
29. Golden Chips
It's just the texture that counts why it's better than Honey Smacks, but otherwise these are the same cereals.
28. Life
Life is pretty good, much better than real life. However, it's not nearly as special as you remember it to be. And you can trust me because my name is Mikey.
27. Prost
Cheerios will get the job done as long as the job is to have an average bowl of cereal. Better than dry snack.
26. Kix
Kix suffers from a very strange problem: once you open the bag, you have to eat the entire box in a week or they'll get so old you can break a tooth.
25. Reese’s Puffs
You know how sometimes you just go, "Fuck it, I don't care if I fit in my bathing suit this summer?" Well, that's the cereal you buy after you've done it.
24. Trix
Trix is for kids because it's probably too cute to justify eating it frequently as an adult, which blows it away.
23. Corn-Pops
Corn pops taste good, aren't sugary, and have a nice, satisfying crunch. That is, until they get mushy, and then they're gross.
22. Special K Red Berries
All it takes to jump over 30 points is add some dried sweet strawberries, which completely changes the entire flavor.
21. Rice Krispies
A classic, but a goodie. A nice balance of sweetness without feeling like too much cereal for kids, and they sing for us. No other grain sings for us.
20. Apple sockets
They hold up perfectly in milk, taste fantastic, and produce one of the best flavored milks to drink after meals.
19. Apple Cinnamon Cheerios
Cheerios make a really good base for a good granola, and that's exactly what this variant is. There's really no reason to ever buy regular Cheerios when they're on the shelf.
18. Basic 4
The box makes it look healthy, but it isn't. What it is, however, is one of the best cereals out there, with a great mix of different flavors and textures. Not to exaggerate, but if you've never tried it, you've wasted your life.
17. Cap’n Crunch
It might seem outrageous to have this out of the top 10, but Cap'n Crunch has one big, big problem: it gets muddy right away. You have to eat it fast or you'll end up with a bowl of porridge.
16. Honey Nut Cheerios
By far the best Cheerios. It's like they looked at Nut & Honey and said, "What if we used these flavors to make a cereal that wasn't terrible?"
15. Frosted Mini Wheat
50% of it is awesome, 50% of it tastes like cardboard. GUESS WHICH SIDE IS WHICH.
14. Cocoa-Krispies
One of the best variations ever made. Not every granola works with chocolate, but this one is way better than the original. Could be ranked higher if there wasn't a better brand.
13. Froot Loops
A great tasting granola with a nice crunchy texture that lasts and the milk that's left is fantastic.
12. Honig-Kix
I'm told these can be hard to find, but man, they're worth the hunt. They're dramatically better than regular kix, and for reasons I don't understand, they don't become obsolete anytime soon either.
11. Raisin dress
A muesli so good it makes raisins tasty.raisins. Raisins are basically spoiled wine turned into an edible rock. But raisin bran is real, whether you're a kid or an adult.
10. Cocoa Puffs
The only real complaint with Cocoa Puffs is that you have to give them a chance to soften up a bit in the milk, but once they do this is a fantastic cereal.
9. Peanut Butter Puffins
The best "adult" muesli in the world. None of the other flavors they sell even come close. A perfect balance of peanut butter so it tastes great without being overly sweet.
8. Fruity pebbles
If Fruity Pebbles, which is almost a perfect granola-eating experience, comes in eighth, that's a great compliment for the next seven.
7. Golden Grahams
The most underrated muesli is finally coming into its own. Delicious, satisfying crunch and they last for the entire bowl.
6. Honey Bundle Oat honey roasted
An amazing granola that isn't terrible for you to eat. The Honey Flavored Oat Clusters are some of the best bites you will find in any meal. It also gets better the more you eat.
5. Count Chocula
That might sound shocking for a chocolate and marshmallow granola, but it's not very unhealthy for you. But even if you gained five pounds for every bowl you eat, it would be worth it.
4. Lucky Charm
Perhaps the favorite of kids everywhere, Lucky Charms is good because even the non-marshmallow bites still taste good.
3. Frosted Flakes
There should be a statue at the United Nations for the man or woman who would look at unsweetened breakfast cereal and say, "Let's just cover it all in sugar."
2. Cocoa-Kiesel
Because they're so small, cocoa pebbles can really fill up your spoon and give you a much more complete and satisfying bite than most cereals. It's also sweetened to perfection, makes chocolate ok to eat for breakfast, and makes the absolute best leftover milk.
1. Cinnamon Toast Crunch
Long live the cinnamon flavored king, the most perfect granola ever invented by man or god. That's just science. And you can't argue with science.
But just in case you disagree with us/science, how would you classify it? Tell us what we did right or wrong in the comments below.Featured image: Kellogg's, Post Consumer Brands
