Dual Personality and Multiple Personalities: What Does the Christian Bible Say?

The multiple personalities of Sybil

Sybil, a woman believed to have developed between 13 and 16 distinct personalities, was diagnosed by her doctor with what was known at the time as multiple personalities. Years of heinous abuse as a child are believed to be at the root of their multiple personalities, each of which is said to represent a part of her true personality that has been damaged by the abuse. Vanessa was the keeper of her musical abilities. Vickie was cultured, sociable, and allowed Sybil to interact in situations that required social skills that her abusive mother had interfered with.

There were at least eleven other personalities, two of whom were male. One of Sybil's multiple personalities was named Marsha, who apparently tried to kill her by suicide more than once. While the personalities appeared to be simply different aspects of the real Sybil, the presence of Marsha, the one she intended to kill, should raise suspicions that there was more going on than just the splitting of various aspects of Sybil's nature into individual personalities. Jesus taught, "The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy..." (King James Version, St. John 10:10). The whole goal of the satanic kingdom is to steal life in all its forms.

A type of dual personality described in the Bible

Romans 7:14-24 says, “For we know the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin. For what I do I do not allow; but what I hate, I do. So if I do what I don't want (don't want) I agree with the law that it's good. Now I don't do it anymore, but the sin that dwells in me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me (i.e., in my flesh); for wanting is present in me, but I cannot find doing good. Because the good that I wanted "I don't do; but the evil that I didn't want, I do. Well, if I do that, I don't do it, I don't do it anymore, but the sin that dwells in me. I then find a law when I would do good, evil is present with me, for I delight in the law of God according to the inner man, but I see another law in my members (bodies) which is against the law of my spirit fights and captivates me the law of sin that is in my limbs. O wretched man that I am, who will deliver me? om the body of this death?"

A very talented Christian writer once pointed out that in the scriptures of Romans 7:14-24 the Apostle Paul describes the struggle that exists between two different and opposing mindsets that reside within the Christian believer. One is the "old man" who represents the sinful nature or "personality" that everyone is born with. The other is called the "new man" or a new "creature" in Christ who takes on a divine nature in obedience to God (2 Peter 1:4).

The old man or the sinful nature/personality of an individual, including Christians, dislikes God. Because of his nature, he cannot love, obey, or have fellowship with God. However, the new man in Christ is not inherently carnal or sinful, so He is the only one who can have fellowship with the Lord. A person's old sinful nature has preferences, beliefs, behaviors, and agenda that are distinct and in sharp contrast to the new creature in Christ. The old man and the new man reside in the same body. This could very loosely be referred to as dual personality by mental health professionals. However, God's Word calls the struggle between a man's sinful nature and his new divine nature in Christ a spiritual matter. The matter concerns only two kinds of spirits - the Holy Spirit, who feeds the divine and obedient nature of Christian believers, and the spirit of the flesh, which is evil simply because it opposes God.

What is very interesting is that God's Word teaches us that all spirits are either holy or unholy. They are good or they are evil; and they belong to the kingdom of God or to the kingdom of Satan. There are no neutral spirits; and spirits never find a middle ground. The scriptures that teach this truth are found in the article,Is there such a thing as neutral supernatural beings?. This knowledge enables us to understand that dual personalities and multiple personalities are in fact spiritual states brought about by either the Holy Spirit or evil spirits involved in every kind of abuse.

Christian believers to whomthe Holy SpiritDwellings and influences have the same basic nature—a divine one spoken of at 2 Peter 1:4. The true body of Christ, of which many members (believers) belong, is one Spirit and one in accord, directed by the one and the same Holy Spirit of God (Ephesians 4:4-6, Philippians 2:2). "Personalities who oppose and are hostile toChristusare not of God.
